Around NYC
1. City budget dramatically expands eligibility for half-price transit program
A budget agreement between Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the City Council makes 340,000 more people eligible for the half-priced Fair Fares transit program.
“We are making public transit more affordable for low-income New Yorkers by increasing the baseline for fare fares by $54 million,” Mamdani said yesterday.
2. SCOTUS ruling sparks protest at Stonewall
Transgender athletes are now banned from girls’ and women’s sports in more than half the country.
New York isn’t one of those states, but last night, people gathered at the Stonewall National Monument worried the decision reaches much farther than the playing field.
3. Mamdani and City Council agree on new housing voucher program
A massive divide between the City Council and Mayor Zohran Mamdani over how to fund an expensive housing voucher program almost kept the city’s budget from being passed on time.
Surprisingly, the socialist mayor argued it was too expensive for the city to keep paying for it — while the City Council got him to agree to add a new program that lawmakers say will actually curb cost increases.
