SAN ANTONIO – It’s day 4 of the Texas Legislature’s special session, and there’s a spotlight on flood preparedness and prevention.
Most of the focus has been on the Hill Country, but San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is pushing to address flood concerns right here.
Mayor Jones is working with both sides of the aisle at the Capitol to advocate for San Antonio, making sure that while legislators are focused on the July 4th floods, they don’t forget about the deadly floods in San Antonio on July 12. She says she’s working to restore and rebuild what the city lost that day.
Flood waters left behind historic damage and a hefty bill. In Thursday’s special session meetings, Mayor Jones sat with state legislators to advocate for the city’s immediate needs.
“$21 million worth of damage that our community experienced,” she shared. “Both in terms of damage to streets and bridges as well as to damage to drainage.”
Despite that, the damage totals still didn’t meet requirements for FEMA assistance.
“That really is going to come out of hide if we don’t get some help from the state,” the Mayor said.
She said the state’s flood plan for San Antonio includes 14 infrastructure projects across all 10 of the city’s districts.
They will cost a total of $411 million, and help is coming from both sides of the aisle.
“When we’ve got great needs like this, we’ve got fiscal uncertainty, right, and we know how our community is already quite vulnerable in many ways,” Mayor Jones said. “Everybody was willing to carry the water.”
The newly elected mayor inherited the city just one week after those deadly floods. She said she’s taking the steps to prepare if it happens again.
“I think it’s important we are looking hard at and, frankly, making hard asks,” Jones said. “We need help from the state, and we also need to make sure that we are making smart investments. We are getting closer, obviously, to the budget sessions, where we’re going to look at these investments and making sure that we’re doing what we can to keep people safe.”
Mayor Jones also mentioned budgeting and investment in regard to the buzz around a new Spurs stadium. She wants to be clear with the community by laying out all the information.
Her priority? Making sure everyone is on the same ‘song sheet’ to make sure no one is ‘out of tune’,
