Police in Georgia warn parents about the ‘Benadryl challenge’ pushing kids toward hallucinations
GRANTVILLE, Ga. —
Police and health officials are warning parents about the dangers of the so-called “Benadryl challenge,” an online trend that encourages young people to take excessive amounts of the over-the-counter allergy medicine in an attempt to trigger hallucinations.
In Georgia, the Grantville Police Department is among the agencies urging parents to talk with their children about the risks.
Videos tied to the trend have promoted taking as many as 12 tablets at once. Health officials warn that going beyond the recommended dose can cause serious side effects, including nausea, seizures and heart problems. In some cases, an overdose can be fatal.
Authorities say parents should discuss the dangers of online challenges with their children and remind them that misusing medication can have life-threatening consequences.
