Spain 1, Austria 0, 36th minute
After many near misses, Spain finally earned its first goal in the 36th minute when Marc Cucurella passed into the center of the box and Mikel Oyarzabal slotted the ball home.
It was the least dramatic of all of Spain’s runs toward goal so far this game, but it was the most successful.
In the 29th minute, Cucurella appeared to score when the ball pinballed around the penalty area, but his goal was waived off after the referee confirm Spain tackled Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager before the shot.
The pro-Spain crowd and Spain’s players were unhappy with the call, but there was obvious impermissible contact on the play.
In the 33rd minute, Spain was weaving through the Austria box and Oyarzabal delivered a powerful shot Schlager dove to stop. The crowd oohed while watching what seemed like a sure goal for the Spanish magician waiting for his World Cup breakout moment.
Yamal had a another look at goal, but his shot was off target and he was ruled offside in the 35th minute.
A minute later, Spain finally found the back of the net.
