A few months ago, Thailand-based ceramic artist Trevor Foster was working in his outdoor studio when he noticed something strange about the mold he’d just poured slip into.
“At first, I thought the mold was just bubbling or maybe had a leak at the bottom,” Foster told The Dodo.
But as he looked closer, he saw something sticking out of it. First, he saw a pair of legs … legs that looked like they were made for jumping. Legs that belonged to a frog.

“It took a few moments of confusion before I spotted his little mouth, and that’s when I sprang into action,” Foster said.
Foster quickly pried open the mold and pulled out the piece of plastic encircling the frog as quickly as possible.

“It all happened so fast, I barely had time to think,” Foster said.
Foster soaked the mold in water to loosen the slip and used his fingers to pry the amphibian out. Once he’d freed the frog, he immediately rinsed him off.
Foster held his breath, praying the frog would be OK. Thanks to his quick thinking, the frog was totally fine, and even seemed thankful that Foster had given him a nice shower.

“After I got him out, he did this cute little motion with his hands, almost like he was feeling shy or ashamed,” Foster said.
After the dust had settled and Foster was certain the frog was doing well, he pieced together how he’d ended up there in the first place.
“There’s a small hole at the top [of the mold], and to a frog, it must have looked like a cozy little burrow,” Foster said.
The frog took some time to hang out in Foster’s studio and rest after his ordeal. Before long, he seemed to feel good as new.

“I set him in a bush, and he immediately tucked himself under a pile of leaves,” Foster said.
While the frog wasted no time returning to his natural habitat, Foster will always treasure the memory of getting to bond with such a unique animal.
“I’ll be making a frog-inspired ceramic series soon to commemorate the experience,” Foster said.
