RICHMOND, Va. — A 36-inch water main break caused low water pressure and outages in parts of Richmond early Friday, city officials said.
The break involved a water main that crosses the canal, according to the City of Richmond. The exact location was not immediately released.
City crews responded to the Trafford Pump Station in Byrd Park and the Westhampton Pump Station near the Country Club of Virginia and the University of Richmond.
“Crews have been working on assessing and isolating the problem since the early hours,” a city spokesperson told CBS 6. “We understand that this is very worrisome for folks, especially for those who were here in 2025 and with the heat.”
Officials said the issue has since been isolated, stopping the major leak.
Some households experienced low water pressure, while others temporarily lost water service altogether.
Reports of impacts came from neighborhoods including the Museum District, Windsor Farms and South Richmond, according to WTVR CBS 6 viewers and social media posts.
The Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Drinking Water said a boil water advisory is not required at this time.
City officials said the water remains safe to drink.
Earlier this week, Richmond asked residents to voluntarily conserve water amid ongoing drought conditions in Virginia.
Richmond’s water treatment plant supplies water to Richmond as well as Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, Goochland and Powhatan counties.
