A 5-year-old girl died early Friday morning after being found unresponsive in an apartment complex pool in west Houston, police said.

Houston police and fire crews were called to the complex in the 3100 block of Hayes Road just after midnight. Officers arrived just before firefighters and immediately began CPR on the child, according to HPD.

Despite life-saving efforts, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics.

Investigators say the girl had left her apartment alone and made her way to the pool. Another resident discovered her in the water. It’s unclear how long she had been there before she was found.

The investigation is ongoing.
