With the return of the bears, the park shared a few things to remember to keep yourself and wildlife safe:
- If you see a black bear while hiking:
- Remain calm
- Make yourself appear large
- Make loud noises
- Slowly back away from the animal
- Stay on designated trails
- Keep food in a secure place while camping
- Report sightings to the Wildlife Sighting Reporting System
- Respect wildlife to yourself and animals safe
This is exciting news to see the bears return to their natural habitat, the park shared.
The return of the bears means the forests are healthy enough to support animals at the top of the food web.
Mohican State Park said this also means forests are on their way to being a balanced ecosystem.
