CANYON – Quarterback Jonah McCown of Jacksonville has transferred to West Texas A&M University (NCAA Division II, Lone Star Conference).
McCown is listed as a freshman on the Buffaloes’ roster.
Last season, McCown (6’1”, 170 pounds) played for Limestone College in South Carolina.
During the off season, the university suspended its football program for financial reasons, forcing players to find another institution to attend in order to continue to play football.
McCown, who played high school football at Brook Hill, is one of six East Texans on the West Texas A&M roster.
He joins wide receivers Corey Simon (Crockett), Zach Phipps (Diboll), Montrel Hatten (Carthage), Marcus Field (Lindale) and Tej Bryant (Mexia).
West Texas A&M, finished 5-6 overall and 5-4 in LSC play last season.
The Buffaloes are slated to open the season at 7 p.m., Aug. 28 by visiting Western Colorado University.
At 7 p.m. Sept. 13, West Texas A&M will travel to Silver City, New Mexico to take on Western New Mexico University in its conference lid lifter.
The Buffaloes are coached by Josh Lynn.
