PEPPER PIKE, Ohio (WOIO) – The Pepper Pike Police Department shared on social media Sunday a black bear sighting in the city.
According to police, the bear was sighted on camera on Lawton Lane.
While black bears are typically shy and prefer to avoid people, the department said it encourages residents to remain aware and take simpler precautions.
Here are ways to keep yourself and wildlife safe if you spot a bear:
- Never approach, feed or attempt to photograph up close
- Give plenty of space
- Remove food sources
- Secure trash cans
- bring pet food and bird feeders indoors when possible
Police said black bears are a natural part of Ohio’s wildlife and, in most cases, will continue on their way if left undisturbed.
If you observe a bear that poses an immediate threat to public safety, call 911.
For non-emergency sightings, the department said to call at 216-831-1424, so it can help monitor activity and keep the community informed.
