SAVANNAH, Ga. —
Savannah author and music journalist Peter Relic is bringing one of hip-hop’s great untold stories to the page with BUST A MOVE: Matt Dike, Delicious Vinyl, and the Hits that First Conquered Pop.
With a foreword by B-Real of Cypress Hill, the book chronicles the rise of Delicious Vinyl, the scrappy Los Angeles label founded in 1987 by Matt Dike and Mike Ross. Working out of a modest Hollywood apartment with just $5,000, primitive drum machines, and a deep belief in the music, the pair helped ignite a cultural shift that would send L.A. hip-hop from the underground to the global mainstream.
Relic’s book captures the energy, risk, and raw ambition behind a label that delivered era-defining hits including Tone Loc’s “Wild Thing,” “Funky Cold Medina,” and Young MC’s “Bust a Move.” At a time when New York dominated hip-hop’s center of gravity, Delicious Vinyl proved that Los Angeles had its own sound, swagger, and commercial power. In doing so, the label helped transform hip-hop into a pop force with lasting historical impact.
More than a music story, BUST A MOVE is also an entrepreneurial one: a tale of ingenuity, instinct, and fearless bets on new talent. Relic shows how two DJs disrupted the traditional music industry and built a label whose influence still echoes across generations of artists and fans.
