Overview: San Diego in the summer
As the days get a little shorter, schools open, football training camps get busy, and more, know that summer is a great time kick back and take a deep breath.
I go through this each summer with some family and friends.
Some of them are counting the days until summer ends and fall is here.
Don’t get me wrong, fall has its advantages too. Football, crisp nights, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and so on are reasons to celebrate.
That said, I’m in no hurry for summer to come to an end any time soon.
I have some friends and family nationwide whose kids are going back to school this month. My response is: Are you kidding me?
When I grew up many years ago in Pennsylvania, we traditionally went back to school right after Labor Day. Getting out of the prior school year around mid-June gave us a good two-and-a-half months of time off.
In today’s world, things are different from what they were when I roamed the halls of my schools in the 1970s and a portion of the 1980s.
Many today return to school in late July in various parts of the country. In doing so, they do not get to enjoy the full summers that many of the rest of us did decades ago.
Outside the classrooms, I know some who complain that summers in San Diego are too hot, too crowded, too busy. To that I say, enjoy all it has to offer.
Many of us end up working too much, stressing over things, turning down opportunities to attend events, and so on. It is amazing after a day of work how worn down you can be. As such, you might miss out on some fun.
Given that I work hard like many others, I often head to the beach on weekends during the summer. For hours during summer weekends, I watch the waves, watch people, read, and even squeeze in a nap or two. For me, it is how I recharge my battery.
While summer doesn’t officially end until Sept. 22, the season will fly by fast, as it typically does. Even though summer may not be your favorite time of year, I would encourage you to enjoy all it has to offer.
As the days get a little shorter, schools open, football training camps get busy, and more, know that summer is a great time to kick back and take a deep breath.
Trust me, I will enjoy every moment of it as I soak in the last couple of months of my favorite time of year.
