Ahead of the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced release date on July 9th, not many mysteries about the remake remain. Prior to Ubisoft’s official reveal, gameplay footage surfaced. Now, a playable build has leaked, with the swashbuckler the latest high-profile victim of piracy.
Players brave enough to test copyright laws reported that files began circulating on June 7th. Numerous videos depicting environments not previously showcased are also being shared.
A piracy epidemic
Piracy is not a new phenomenon, but 2026 has seen a rash of Steam games cracked prematurely. Subnautica 2 and Forza Horizon 6 are two examples, with Microsoft’s open-world racer appearing 9 days early. However, the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced files are from Ubisoft’s launcher, rather than the Valve marketplace.
One saving grace for the publisher is that the anticipated remake includes Denuvo DRM. That may limit lost sales, but the hypervisor bypass can now circumvent the anti-tamper software. Adding to the concerns of studios, a hacker has stripped Denuvo from other titles.
When looking for culprits for the leaks, journalists are popular suspects. Media members have been testing the game before the Black Flag Resynced review embargo expires on July 8th. Considering the turnover many gaming sites are experiencing, finding responsible parties is challenging.
What’s unknown about the Black Flag remake?
Even as a modern upgrade of a beloved Assassin’s Creed game, surprises undoubtedly exist that piracy could spoil. Protagonist Edward Kenway’s narrative has grown thanks to new cinematics and side activities. Still, how many extra missions and fresh content players can expect is unclear.
Developers have been more forthcoming about graphical improvements, bolstered by ray-traced global illumination. In addition to feeling more immersive, there is greater freedom to explore Caribbean settings. PC, Xbox, and PS5 players can now dive nearly anywhere and discover what lurks underwater.
Published a day before the Black Flag Resynced release date, reviews will likely focus on revamped combat. Fans are hopeful that attacks are more responsive, without battles becoming overly simplified.
