MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – A black bear was reportedly spotted in Montgomery early Friday morning, according to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Investigators said the bear was seen near the elementary school around 5 a.m.
The department said it is aware of the report. If you encounter the bear, do not approach it. Give it plenty of room to escape, and report the sighting to Operation GameWatch at (800) 272-4263.
At this time of year, mature bears may travel in search of mates or a new home after leaving their mothers. These bears are usually passing through and are not likely to stick around or be seen again.
The black bear is a protected species in Alabama. Shooting one is a Class A misdemeanor.
