RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – A black bear has been reported on the outskirts of Lead in the Kirk area, city officials said, adding to a series of sightings reported across the Black Hills in recent weeks.
The Lead report follows multiple bear sightings in the Spearfish area over the past several weeks. City officials are reminding residents to remain vigilant and take precautions to avoid attracting bears into neighborhoods.
Officials recommend the following steps to limit bear activity near homes:
- Secure garbage containers
- Do not leave food outside, including pet food and bird seed
- Thoroughly clean grills after use
- Be aware of surroundings when recreating outdoors
Anyone who encounters a bear is asked to call the Lead Police Department.
