The Mitchell Freeway southbound has shut before the Northbridge tunnel and major diversions are in place following a police incident this morning.
The southbound lanes of the freeway after Vincent Street have closed as a result of the incident, which occurred on Graham Farmer Freeway about 5.35am on Tuesday.
Traffic is being diverted through Vincent Street and the Graham Farmer Freeway eastbound lanes are closed before the tunnel.
Main Roads said the area is congested and drivers are urged to seek another route.
Police said there was no risk to the public following the incident, which appears to be mental health-related.
“The surrounding area will remain closed for some time and motorists/pedestrians are advised to avoid the area and check with Main Roads for updates,” she said.
