It wasn’t that long ago that App State lost three games in a two-year span and reached double-digit victories nearly every season.

From 2015-21, the Mountaineers had double-digit wins in five seasons and in the two years they didn’t win 10 or more games, they finished with nine victories.

The Mountaineers are now coming off a 5-6 campaign which was their worst finish since joining the Sun Belt in 2014. Not long after the season was complete, former head coach Shawn Clark was fired.

Dowell Loggains was hired less than a week later after spending much of his coaching career in the NFL. We know the App State faithful have high expectations for the Mountaineers and their new coach.

College football betting odds have App State’s win total at 5.5 entering the season, with the Over at -165 and the Under at +140. Can Loggains get the Mountaineers back above .500 this year?

How Many Games Will The App State Mountaineers Win In 2025?

The Mountaineers open the season with a trip to Charlotte to face former Ohio coach Tim Albin and his new squad. The spread for this Week 1 matchup has App State favored by 8.5 points. The Mountaineers are 3-0 all time against the 49ers, and I like them to win this game and pick up a home win the following week against Lindenwood to start 2-0.

Things will get tougher the next three games when App State visits Southern Miss for its first conference game, which is followed by a trip to Boise State. They will have a bye week in between these outings but then host Oregon State in Week 6.

I don’t think the Mountaineers come out of Boise with a win, but I like them to bounce back with a home victory over Oregon State. App State hasn’t been great against Power Four teams and are 1-9 in its last 10 matchups against P4 opponents, but this is a long trip for the Beavers (2,700 miles) and they’ll be going into one of the toughest places to play in the Group of Five

The Mountaineers then visit Georgia State and host Coastal Carolina for their homecoming game the next two weeks. I like them to win both of these games. They’ve lost the last three to CCU, but App State is 6-1 against the Chanticleers in Boone dating back to 2005.

Early November isn’t the easiest for App State as it plays both Georgia Southern and James Madison in back-to-back weeks. These are two of the top three favorites to win the Sun Belt.

The back half of November should get a little easier, though, with home contests against Marshall and Arkansas State. I expect the Mountaineers to end the season with a pair of wins here.

How Many Games Will The App State Mountaineers Lose In 2025?

I anticipate Southern Miss will be better than what some project — they were voted to finish fourth in the Sun Belt West in the coaches preseason poll — and the Mountaineers will struggle on the road in its conference opener. In the last three seasons, App State is 4-10 on the road in league games.

Like I mentioned above, I also expect a loss to Boise, and I think there could be a three-game mid-season losing streak for App State when it visits Old Dominion prior to those matchups with GSU and JMU. The Mountaineers could easily pick up a win in any of these games, though.

App State Win Total Prediction

I predict App State will win at least six games and find its way to a bowl berth.

It seems like most of App State’s games this season could truly go either way. I like them to find a way to win most of them, especially the ones at home. I can’t imagine this program having two consecutive losing seasons, even with a new head coach.
