Dallas is in the top 50 U.S. cities for bed bugs, according to a report from pest-control company Orkin.
Dallas ranked 23 in U.S. cities for bed bugs, representing the only Texas city and rising one spot from last year.
Atlanta-based Orkin reports cities with increased bed bug activity each year as summer travel grows.
Orkin bases the rankings on data from metropolitan areas where the company performed the most residential and commercial bed bug treatments from May 12, 2025 to May 12, 2026.
The company highlighted that popular vacation spots Tampa, Fla., and Myrtle Beach, S.C., have both been added to the list this year.
“Travel season brings excitement, but it also makes awareness especially important,” Shannon Sked, an entomologist and Orkin’s national technical director, said in a news release.
Cities with high population and resident and visitor turnover, including apartments, dormitories and hotels, can be common areas for bed bugs to spread, according to Orkin.
The top five U.S. cities for bed bugs are Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, Cleveland and Indianapolis.
Ohio is the most represented state on the report, with six cities making the top 50. The report shows a broader trend of Midwestern cities having the nation’s bed bug hotspots.
Orkin recommends that travelers follow the acronym “S.L.E.E.P.” to inspect for bed bugs by searching the room for signs of infestation, lifting sheets and cushions, elevating and examining luggage and putting clothing in the dryer after returning home.
The Environmental Protection Agency said knowing what bed bugs look like is the first step in identifying and controlling them. While they can vary depending on location, the smelly insects are usually long, brown and about the size of an apple seed, EPA said.
