1. Mamdani pushes specialized school admissions reform

Mayor Zohran Mamdani called for changes to address racial disparities in specialized high school admissions after only three Black students received offers to Stuyvesant High School’s incoming freshman class.

The mayor said the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test alone does not measure students’ potential and stressed the need to improve educational outcomes before the exam.

2. Protest in Manhattan follows two fatal ICE shootings

The deaths of Lorenzo Araujo in Texas and Johan Guerrero in Maine by ICE agents brought protesters to Foley Square Tuesday night, calling for accountability as federal investigations into both shootings get underway.

“For me, this past week is a reminder that we should all be out here,” Brooklyn resident Kevin Jacobs said.

3. New York politicians defend thwarted meeting with Iran

A member of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration attempted to hold an unauthorized meeting with Iran’s representative to the United Nations.

The State Department quashed the engagement, with an official telling Spectrum News it was “unconscionable” and that the Iranian ambassador “consistently works to undermine U.S. interests and whitewash his regime’s crimes.”
