University of New Mexico Hospital has announced that it will not be renewing its healthcare contract with Metropolitan Detention Center next year. UNMH and Bernalillo County have mutually agreed that UNMH will conclude dental, medical, and behavioral services at the end of their current agreement. The four-year agreement is set to end next July 2027, and the two organizations have announced the launch of a collaborative planning process to support the transition of services. “Working with UNM Hospital over the past three years has been a tremendous opportunity to move MDC healthcare forward,” said Bernalillo County Manager Cindy Chavez. “By proactively bringing together the university and outside experts, we can use this final year of our agreement to strengthen what we’ve built, learn from the challenges we’ve encountered and create a thoughtful path forward for the next phase of care.”Officials say over the coming months, both Bernalillo County and UNM Hospital will work together to ensure continuity of care for patients while evaluating options for the next phase of healthcare services at the detention center.
