1. Blakeman vows to end Hochul’s ‘crazy’ data center moratorium
Gov. Kathy Hochul’s Republican rival for reelection vowed to rescind her one-year moratorium on new large data centers.
For Bruce Blakeman, the Republican executive of Nassau County, data centers keep New York competitive with other states and countries in the great artificial intelligence race.
“The moratorium is crazy. She should have had it figured out by now,” Blakeman said.
2. Debate over horse-drawn carriages in NYC goes back decades
An animal rights activist gave impassioned testimony at City Hall about the need for stricter regulation of horse carriages.
“There’s no obvious and clear way that you can protect animals in a motorized vehicle environment,” she said.
The year wasn’t 2026. It was December 1992, and Mayor David Dinkins was vetoing a bill that would have loosened restrictions on the industry.
3. 30 years later, friends remember teacher killed in TWA Flight 800 crash
Retired teacher Hannah Heyle, of the Upper East Side, says she and her husband were visiting a friend in Toulouse, France when she learned about the crash of TWA Flight 800 that claimed the life of her friend and colleague Lois Van Epps, of the Upper West Side.
Van Epps was just 58 when she died on July 17, 1996.
