Five people were hurt after a fire broke out at a restaurant and spread to another building on Madison Avenue in Midtown Manhattan Friday.
The FDNY responded to reports of flames just before 7 a.m. at a 43-story office building between East 53rd and East 54th streets.
Fire officials said the blaze started in the ducts of a restaurant called Papillon at 225 4th Street. It spread through ductwork into the commercial building above Papillon.
More than 140 fire and EMS personnel were at the scene and evacuated more than 200 people who were inside the office building. They checked all 43 floors due to smoke traveling through the ducts.
“Each building had its own separate system. The ductwork was in the restaurant. It went through their building into the commercial building, which is a very unique operation to have,” said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief John Corcoran.

Five people had minor injuries, with one transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Fire officials said they were lucky because the alarm came in early, so not as many people were inside. The building remains evacuated as of Friday afternoon, and workers say they will likely be out for the day.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
