Looking ahead: Severe Alert Day on Tuesday with strong storms possible
Increasing storm threat for Tuesday, strong winds possible.
WLKY weather with meteorologist Eric Zernik. Here in the metro it’s been *** relatively dry Sunday, but for our communities to the south, especially closer to the parkways, you have had *** few isolated showers and maybe even *** rumble of thunder, but most of that activity is beginning to wind down. Tomorrow looks to be another mainly dry day, but as we look ahead to Tuesday, that is going to be the next chance for some storms moving our way, and some of them could be strong and severe. So we have made Tuesday *** severe alert day. We’re looking at the possibility for some damaging wind gusts, but even *** few tornadoes along with those downpours that could lead to. Flooding are all possible. Timing for this is still not really too defined. We’re thinking sometime late morning into the afternoon and then maybe another round late afternoon into the evening. So really there’s *** chance throughout the entire day that we could get some of those stronger storms to move through. The storm Prediction Center has upgraded us now to *** level 3 or an enhanced risk for much of the WLKY viewing area, including Louisville and the majority of the metro. So that shows you there’s still *** pretty good chance that we could have. Numerous storms that are capable of producing some warnings and again damaging winds, heavy downpours, and *** brief tornado are all possible. And this is *** part of *** bigger system. You can see how it’s going to encompass much of the Ohio Valley and the mid-Atlantic. So *** large area is going to be dealing with these strong storms as we head into our Tuesday. Let’s bring it back closer to home and really kind of time it out for you as best we can right now. I do think it’s *** dry start to our Tuesday, so the Tuesday morning commute, no issues there. It looks to be as we get closer to lunchtime around 11. 11 o’clock we could begin to get some of those stronger storms. You can see even the purple showing up. That’s going to be the possibility for some heavy downpours, those gusty winds along this, and then watch as we get into the early afternoon how that line really develops and it’s along the leading edge of that. That’s where we could get some of those stronger, gustier winds pushing into the area. Could even have *** few isolated tornadoes try and bubble up along that. So we’ll have to watch this very closely as we move from the late morning into the early afternoon. Most of this could move out by 23 o’clock, and then if we can get. The atmosphere to re-energize. *** few more stronger storms could then develop late into Tuesday afternoon into the evening. So it could be *** couple of different waves of some stronger storms before the front finally pushes through by late Tuesday night. And as we head into Wednesday morning, we’ll get that drier, more comfortable air to move in. And I do think the second half of the work week looks really nice. Let’s take *** look at the radar right now, and you can see there’s that activity that I was mentioning down to the south that pushed out of the viewing area. But now as the front begins to make its way towards E Town. *** couple more showers are developing from Breckenridge in the Hardden La Rue and back into Marion County, but these are on the lighter side, so should end pretty quickly as the evening goes on. That’s because our front is now making its way south of Louisville. We’re getting *** little bit of that Canadian wildfire haze in there as well, but it’s also turning *** little bit more comfortable, not quite as humid. So as we head through the rest of this evening, those isolated showers will. Fade. We’ll hang on to some clouds through the overnight and into the first part of our Monday. Looks to be *** mainly dry day, but again, *** few stray showers, mainly to the south will be possible on and off throughout our Monday. Otherwise *** mix of sun and clouds with those hot conditions returning. Here’s *** live look at downtown Louisville and you’re gonna really see again that Canadian wildfire smoke out there. Temperatures still quite warm, 89. Degrees we do have that northerly breeze, but again feel like temperatures aren’t that much more than the actual temperature, only around 91 as that dry air moves in and that will allow temperatures to cool off *** little quicker as we head through the evening. So 80s through at least 10 o’clock and then down into the 70s by 11, lower 70s as we start off our Monday. *** mix of sun and clouds, another hot day. Temperatures back into the 90s with that stray shower. In the afternoon, but Tuesday really is the date we’re focusing on for the severe alert with scattered storms, some of which strong to severe, and then behind it *** nice break from the heat and humidity as highs drop into the low to mid 80s and even some lower humidity. OK, and just that’s just the big thing to keep an eye on Tuesday. Tuesday is really the day you need to be weather aware, make sure you have *** way to get those warnings because there’s *** good chance we could get some. OK, thank you so much, Eric.

It is a Severe Alert Day, which means we think some warnings may be issued. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the bulk of the viewing area under an Enhanced risk (level 3 of out 5). Ahead of an approaching front, temperatures and humidity will climb which will create an unstable atmosphere to help fuel thunderstorms. The front will move in during the day into Tuesday evening triggering thunderstorms. Some of the storms could be strong to severe. The primary concern will be a damaging wind threat. While the tornado threat will be lower, an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out. Behind the front, much more comfortable air arrives with highs in the lower to mid 80s and low humidity.
