The offbeat comedy film commemorated its premiere in the city with a special screening at the Laemmle Royal, featuring stars Seth Green, Jackie Tohn and Judah Lewis, along with producers Shai Korman and Andra Gordon

Summer camp was in session on Friday at the Laemmle Royal with the Los Angeles premiere of Rachel Israel’s The Floaters. The celebration of the film’s release included a red carpet, a screening of the film and a Q&A with the cast and producers.

Hosted by James Deveney of the “Raiders of the Lost Podcast,” the Q&A featured actors Seth Green, Jackie Tohn, Judah Lewis, Bekah Zornosa, Jillian Jordyn and Ben Krieger, along with producer Shai Korman and producer and co-writer Andra Gordon. Lead actress Sarah Podemski was not in attendance.

The film, framed through multigenerational perspectives, follows Nomi (Jackie Tohn), recently ousted from her rock band, who takes a last-resort job from her overachiever best friend Mara (Sarah Podemski) at their childhood Jewish summer camp. Mara, the camp director, works on a broken septic system and asks Nomi to supervise a group of outsider teens known as the floaters. When their rival camp, led by Mara and Nomi’s nemesis Daniel (Seth Green), issues a high-stakes challenge with prize money, Nomi pushes the limits and loses Mara’s trust. So, Nomi and the floaters work to overcome their differences and outperform their rivals to keep the camp alive.

Many of the panelists shared how their own experiences at Jewish summer camp influenced the film. Green, Tohn and Zornosa, and producers Korman and Gordon spoke of camp memories that directly impacted the screenplay.

Six special Q&A screenings were held throughout the weekend, with actors and filmmakers continuing their discussions on Saturday and Sunday at the Laemmle Royal and Laemmle Town Center.

The Laemmle Royal premiere followed the film’s New York premiere a week prior, as the movie continues to roll out nationally.
