3-year-old dies a month after being found in Phoenix apartment pool

  • July 21, 2026

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A 3-year-old boy has died about a month after he was spotted floating in a central Phoenix apartment complex pool, Phoenix police confirmed Monday.

The victim’s name has not been released. The Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner ruled drowning the cause of death, police said.

Investigators said the case was closed and no arrests were made. Police also said they were not recommending any charges.

A man who lived at the complex saw the boy in the water, not moving, on July 19 just after 1 p.m. on Colter Street, north of Camelback Road, near 11th Avenue, and called 911. Then the boy’s father arrived.

Firefighters said no one knew CPR, so the dispatcher walked the adults through what to do.

The boy was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The situation was too much for the father, who was also taken to the hospital in stable condition.

It was unclear how long the boy was in the water. There was a fence around the pool, but it was unclear whether the gate was locked.
