Just weeks into her new job, San Antonio City Councilwoman Ivalis Meza Gonzalez was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated Thursday evening, according to Bexar County Central Magistrate arrest records.
She was arrested at 11:25 p.m. Thursday and released on a $1,000 bond.
Meza Gonzalez was sworn in last month to represent District 8 on the city’s Northwest Side after she won a runoff election.
She released a statement about the arrest on Friday afternoon.
“Last night I was pulled over under suspicion of DWI. As a public servant, I know we’re held to a higher standard, and my actions failed to meet that. I deeply regret the disappointment this has caused my constituents, my colleagues, and my family. As this matter moves forward, I’ll take full responsibility, and I will not stop working to make sure my constituents are well represented,” she said.
Meza Gonzalez, 43, took a commanding lead in the first round of a six-way council race for the influential seat. She is a former City Hall staffer and had worked as then-Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s chief of staff.
Her mother, “Choco” González Meza, was a longtime voting rights advocate, La Raza Unida activist, local Democratic Party chair.
The DWI is a class B misdemeanor, according to the arrest record.
