Metra advised riders taking its Union Pacific-Northwest Line on Sunday evening to prepare for extensive delays after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train near Palatine.
A Metra spokesperson confirmed a fatal incident involving a pedestrian occurred at around 3:25 p.m. near the Wood Street and Smith Street railroad crossing. A woman was struck by a train, taken to an area hospital and was pronounced dead, the Metra official said.
Palatine police said officers were dispatched to the scene around 3:30 p.m. and were assisting with both traffic control and scene security. North Smith Street between West Wood Street and West Wilson Street remained closed while police investigated.
