As part of Artown’s 30th anniversary, an exclusive exhibit is showcasing eight towering Spirit Animal statues in downtown Reno.

These 22-foot-high sculptures, located at the intersection of South Virginia Street and the Truckee River, celebrate Mexican folk art with their bright colors and intricate designs.

Each statue features a QR code on its base, offering additional information about the artwork. The Spirit Animals, originally created by artist Pedro Linares in the 1930s, blend traditional woodcarving with vibrant hues and detailed patterns.

These colossal sculptures, known as Alebrijes, are rooted in Mexican cultural and spiritual beliefs. Spirit Animals, or Nahuales, are mystical guides believed to protect and empower, sharing gifts such as strength, speed, or wisdom. The Alebrijes bring these guardians to life with color, creativity, and cultural pride.
