HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – This year marks the 183rd anniversary of La Ho’iho’i Ea and celebrations kicked off on Saturday across the state.
The holiday on July 31st honors the day when sovereignty was restored to King Kamehemeha the third following a five-month British occupation.
On Saturday, on Oahu, festivities kick off at 8 a.m. with a community walk at Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate school.
Events are also being held in Waianae and Haleiwa.
Maui Nui Botanical gardens, Molokai Community health center, and Pa’auilo Elementary school on Hawaii Island will host celebrations starting at 9 a.m.
On Sunday, more events will be held in Thomas Square in Honolulu, Lihue, and Pahoa on Hawaii Island.
