OXNARD, Calif. — Pro Bowl guard Tyler Smith made an interesting comment about his position status as the Cowboys arrived here for the start of training camp Monday.
Smith said he’s not sure if he’ll remain at guard or move to tackle.
“We’ll see what happens,” Smith said. “Ultimately, Schotty makes those decisions. Where I do line up, I’m going to be at the best of my ability.”
Cowboys officials were thinking of moving Smith to left tackle full time because of disappointment with the play of Tyler Guyton. Last season, Guyton started 10 games at left tackle before getting placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Guyton missed several weeks of training camp last summer because of a knee injury, but he recovered in time to start the season. Guyton played well at times, but not enough for team officials to feel comfortable giving him the starting job full time.
However, Smith’s comments Monday raise questions as to whether the Cowboys have made a change at the left tackle position.
Smith, a three-time Pro Bowler, is considered one of the top players at his position. If he were moved to left tackle, he said he would like to know at some point in the offseason.
In June, Smith said he was going to play guard, which was supported by Schottenheimer’s comments to reporters. Schottenheimer had praised the work of Guyton in the offseason, leading one to believe the offensive line was somewhat settled.
But after Smith’s comments Monday, there might be changes coming.
