TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Airports typically offer passengers a variety of free amenities. One of these facilities is free Wi-Fi or Internet connection that can be used freely by anyone while waiting for their flight. However, travelers should be cautious when using it. Unknowingly, Wi-Fi has the potential to expose travelers to serious risks even before boarding the plane.
Free Wi-Fi at airports is often used to pass the time. However, experts warn that this can make users vulnerable to several dangerous digital threats.
Public Internet networks can be used to check emails, access bank accounts, or book last-minute hotels. This habit creates an opening for personal data theft.
Personal Data Theft
Geoff Pestell, CEO of the broadband comparison site Fibre Compare, explains that one of the biggest risks of joining a public Wi-Fi network is the potential for identity theft. Hackers can extract a variety of personal information, including location and travel history, as well as financial information such as banking and credit card details. Even basic yet sensitive details such as name, contact details, and marital status.
In addition, public Wi-Fi hotspots, which are often unencrypted, expose online activities completely. “Many users are unaware that public Wi-Fi networks often do not encrypt the data you transmit,” noted Geoff, as reported by Express.co.uk.
This allows strangers on the same network to eavesdrop on a traveler’s Internet usage, potentially stealing data ranging from login credentials to personal emails.
Risks of Malware and Phishing
There is also the risk of malware and phishing. Hackers can inject devices with malicious software through fake download links or trick travelers into filling out fake forms disguised as official portals.
“If you use public Wi-Fi networks, hackers may also be able to infect your computer, mobile phone, or other connected devices with malicious software,” said Geoff.
