Jacksonville State University basketball player suspended after rape arrest

A Jacksonville State University men’s basketball player has been suspended from the team after being arrested on a rape charge, the university confirmed Friday.
Daniel Tobiloba Adegboyega, 21, of Jacksonville, is charged with first-degree rape by forcible compulsion, according to an arrest warrant.
The warrant says the incident happened on or about July 29.
He is being held without bond under Aniah’s Law and is scheduled for a hearing Monday, Aug. 3, in Calhoun County District Court.
The Calhoun County Jail website lists Adegboyega as being in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It was not immediately clear why ICE had placed a hold on him or what his immigration status is.
Before transferring to Jacksonville State, Adegboyega played basketball at the University of South Florida. The USF player biography says he is from Nigeria.
An attorney has been appointed to represent him.
In a statement to WVTM 13, Jacksonville State University said:
“We are aware of the arrest. In response, the individual has been suspended from the men’s basketball team. Because the matter did not occur on campus and remains under active investigation by the Jacksonville Police Department, questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the Jacksonville Police Department.”
The Jacksonville Police Department is investigating.
