Robbery suspect with gun shot by deputy in La Riviera neighborhood, Sacramento sheriff says
LA RIVIERA, Calif. —
A Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy shot a man who was armed with a gun that he had stolen during one of two robberies on Friday, the sheriff’s office said.
The shooting happened near Barracuda Way east of Watt Avenue in the La Riviera neighborhood after the man first robbed someone at knifepoint and later stole a gun from a homeowner and threatened his life, sheriff’s spokesman Edward Igoe said.
No deputies or crime victims were hurt, Igoe said. The suspect was taken to the hospital and his condition was unclear.
Deputies were first called to the 9000 block of Folsom Boulevard after a construction worker at the end of his shift encountered a man who had broken into his vehicle and stolen his wallet and phone, Igoe said.
When the man tried to get his items back, the man threatened him with a knife and fled before deputies arrived, Igoe said.
Igoe said the suspect left behind identification and other material.
Around 10:20 a.m., deputies received a report about a burglary in the 2600 block of Mackinaw Way. In that case, the caller said he came home to find a person who had broken in had stolen the homeowner’s handgun, Igoe said.
After the robber pointed the handgun at the homeowner and threatened his life, the homeowner fled and called 911.
“From a dangerous Richter scale this is going off the edge,” Igoe said.
Deputies located the suspect nearby on a bike he had stolen and chased him from Grayling Way to the end of a cul de sac on Barracuda Way. The suspected robber squeezed through a fence into a shopping center’s parking lot, Igoe said.
Deputies tried to get the man to drop the gun and one fired when he raised the firearm at them, Igoe said.
Deputies then applied first aid to the man with a chest seal and tourniquet before he was taken to the hospital.
Neighbors told KCRA 3’s Denzen Cortez they heard two shots being fired. Igoe said he did not have the number of shots that were fired confirmed.
Ring surveillance footage shared with KCRA 3 showed a person on a bike appearing to be chased by at least two patrol cars with sirens blaring before the shooting. Another patrol car later arrived at the scene.
