UnityPoint nurses’ union vote faces objections from health care provider
The Teamsters Local 90 announced UnityPoint Des Moines nurses voted to unionize, but UnityPoint Health disputes the results, citing objections that require a hearing.
DES MOINES, Iowa —
The Teamsters Local 90 announced that UnityPoint Des Moines nurses voted to unionize, but UnityPoint Health disputes the election results, citing serious objections that require further review.
On its website and social media, the union stated, “It’s official: we won! As of July 30 the NLRB just confirmed it, UnityPoint Des Moines nurses voted union.”
Video from a nurses’ rally in June highlights the ongoing efforts to unionize. Last week, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders sent a letter to UnityPoint urging the health care provider to recognize the Iowa nurses who voted to unionize last year. Sanders accused UnityPoint of “illegal union-busting tactics.”
In response, UnityPoint Health issued a statement saying, “The National Labor Relations Board has not decided the outcome of the election. The NLRB determined that UnityPoint Health raised serious objections that require a hearing, which is scheduled to begin August 26.”
KCCI has reached out to the National Labor Relations Board and is awaiting a response.
