It was a good day for low rounds as the Star Electric Midland Men’s City Golf Championship had 10 under-par scores on Saturday.
It was 2022 tournament champ Richman Houston that went into the clubhouse with the lowest round as he fired a 65 on Hogan Park’s par-72 Roadrunner Course.

Houston will hold a one-stroke lead over second-place Michael Sullivan (66) and a two-stroke advantage over third-place Kellen Young (67) heading into Sunday’s second and final round of the Midland Men’s City Golf Championship on the Roadrunner Course.
Houston made seven birdies and no bogeys to reach the top of the leaderboard.
Houston said he hit 17 greens.
“I struck the ball good and my irons were good,” Houston said. “I got lucky off the tee twice, but other than that, it was a nice round. It was nothing spectacular. It was pretty ho hum, boring round of golf, I know if that sounds bad to say. A boring 65. It was nothing spectacular. I played good golf, that’s all it was.”

Houston added that he had a couple of par saves to avoid bogey. Houston said he made a 10-foot putt on the eighth hole to avoid a bogey.
“The course was playing great,” Houston said. “It’s playing firm and fast in the fairways, which is awesome I think for kind of the links style course that it is, that it is playing firm and fast. The greens are rolling good. The weather was awesome. It was nice, it wasn’t 110. Ninety was as hot as it got, so it was awesome. I enjoyed today a lot. I’m happy to see the course playing in a very challenging but fair condition.”
Sullivan will be in contention on Sunday for the tournament title after finishing 10th at the Midland Men’s City Golf Championship in 2025.
The Green Tree Country Club member made seven birdies and one bogey.

“Everything went well for me,” Sullivan said. “I have been playing in this tournament for the last couple of years and I’ve learned from playing with a lot of the younger guys to just hit driver and be aggressive, so that’s what I did today, I hit driver on every hole and stayed aggressive and the putts started falling.”
Sullivan said he played golf in high school in McKinney, but he took the sport more seriously after moving to Midland in 2017.
“It wasn’t really until after college and moving to Midland when I started to play a lot,” Sullivan said. “I play about once a week, I’m lucky if my wife lets me. But I have actually been on vacation in Colorado, so this is now my 10th round in 11 days. I’m kind of finding a hot streak right now.”
Drew Ironside, Jason Hewitt, John Fischer and Carter Tipton each shot a 69 to sit in a four-way tie for fourth. Three-time champ Rick Houston, Chris Nolen and Alex Clouse all carded a 71 to sit in a three-way tie for eighth.

Richman Houston has played clutch on the final round Sunday in the past, winning a playoff to claim the title in 2022.
“Nothing changes much,” Richman Houston said of Sunday. “I didn’t play aggressive today. I played pretty conservative and I still shot a good score. I will probably still do the same thing tomorrow. I don’t feel a need to push it and I don’t feel a need to really lay back off the wheel, off the gas. I will stick to my game plan. If putts go in, they do. If the putts don’t go in, they don’t. We’ll see what happens.”
