State road officials on Saturday closed an exit on the Kennedy Expressway near Jefferson Park after part of a retaining wall crumbled.
The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that there would be an emergency road closure at the inbound Lawrence Avenue exit on the Kennedy (Interstate 90), citing the early morning concrete retention wall failure as the reason.
It was unclear how long the inbound Lawrence Avenue exit may be closed to traffic.
“The department is inspecting the damage and evaluating the necessary repairs,” IDOT said in a statement. “Additional information, including the scope of the repairs and the duration of any long-term closures, will be provided once the inspections are complete.
While the Lawrence Avenue exit is closed, IDOT recommends commuters account for additional time in their drive and seek alternate routes. Drivers should pay extra attention while passing through work zones and be aware of all workers and repair equipment.
