Jakarta. The Jakarta Provincial Government is reevaluating its list of social aid beneficiaries to ensure the assistance is targeted and appropriate, following reports that thousands of recipients are allegedly involved in online gambling activities.
The move follows recent findings by Indonesia’s Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), which revealed a concerning overlap between social aid recipients and individuals engaged in online gambling.
“Social assistance is intended for those who genuinely need it. If recipients are found to be involved in online gambling, the aid will be redirected to more deserving citizens,” Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said in a statement on Saturday.
The provincial government is working closely with PPATK to obtain comprehensive data on the issue. This collaboration is being strengthened through a memorandum of understanding signed last Wednesday between the Jakarta administration, PPATK, and the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK), as part of broader efforts to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing.
According to PPATK data, 602,419 Jakarta residents were flagged for suspected involvement in online gambling throughout 2024, with total transactions reaching Rp 3.12 trillion (approximately $191 million). Of that number, 15,033 individuals were also listed as social assistance beneficiaries.
“We want to ensure that government aid is used properly — to meet basic needs and strengthen the social and economic resilience of communities,” said Governor Pramono.
He also called on the public to help create a healthier and more productive environment, free from illegal practices, and urged citizens to report any suspected misuse of social assistance in their neighborhoods.
Governor Pramono reaffirmed the city’s commitment to regularly updating its social aid database to maintain fairness and ensure that assistance reaches those who need it most.
“This initiative is part of our broader effort to ensure that government support truly benefits the most vulnerable,” he concluded.
