Space-based AI infrastructure is moving closer to reality. In a major milestone for orbital computing, SpaceX has announced a new hardware partnership with Nvidia to power its upcoming network of data center satellites designed to handle artificial intelligence workloads in space.
An official post on X from @SpaceX confirmed the partnership:
“SpaceX is partnering with @Nvidia to design the Starmind AI1 satellite compute payload. Each of the Starmind satellites will include NVIDIA Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs for datacenter class space compute.”
The announcement dropped alongside SpaceX’s first public earnings call, following its historic IPO in June. The aerospace giant currently commands a market cap of nearly $1.5 trillion as it works to take its ambitions for orbital AI from concept to reality.
Built for Space Compute and Solar Power
According to technical specifications published on SpaceX’s official Starmind page, the AI1 satellite will use localized compute to process AI workloads, beaming processed data back to Earth from low-latency, sun-synchronous orbit via high-bandwidth optical laser links connected to the Starlink constellation. It will harvest solar power and cooling in low-Earth orbit, overcoming terrestrial power bottlenecks.

Not a Tesla App
By radiating heat directly into the vacuum of space, these satellites forego the need for energy-intensive cooling towers and chillers needed in terrestrial data centers, dropping cooling overhead by an order of magnitude. While SpaceX still plans to make the system architecture modular to ensure easy upgrades prevent reliance on a single chip vendor, initial builds will rely on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin architecture.
Gigasat Factory and Global Synergies
SpaceX plans to build these orbital data centers at scale inside its dedicated Gigasat Factory in Bastrop, Texas, targeting mass production and initial deployments as early as 2027.
While Nvidia will supply chips for the first-generation Starmind satellites, custom hardware remains in development. SpaceX continues co-developing custom AI silicon through the TERAFAB AI chip project with Tesla and Intel.
These shared technology pipelines continue to fuel rumors of a corporate combination between Tesla and SpaceX, though Elon Musk recently denied rumors of selling Tesla’s China business to clear regulatory paths for a merger. Moving compute into orbit solves growing terrestrial grid constraints and massively decreases operating costs, paving the way for scalable space-based AI processing.
