Real Madrid have reached an agreement worth up to €140million with RB Leipzig for the signing of Yan Diomande following lengthy negotiations.

Diomande, 19, joined Leipzig on their pre-season training camp in Austria on Monday ahead of his transfer to Madrid being ratified by the German club’s board.

A deal worth in the region of €125m plus €15m in add-ons is now in place with the Ivory Coast international set to be given permission to travel to Madrid to undergo a medical.

Leganes, his former club, are also set to receive a percentage of the fee per the terms of his move to Leipzig a year ago.

The Athletic reported on July 26 Madrid had been expected to reach an agreement to sign Diomande, following Paris Saint-Germain’s withdrawal from negotiations. Liverpool were also previously interested.

Diomande returned to training at Leipzig in June following his World Cup campaign with Ivory Coast but did not travel to the club’s pre-season training camp in Austria on Saturday as Leipzig continued to negotiate with Madrid over his transfer.

Leipzig insist the Ivory Coast international did not travel with his team-mates due to feeling unwell and his absence was unrelated to his future.

Diomande is contracted to Leipzig until 2030 and the German club have been trying to tie him down to a new deal. Leipzig have been holding out for a fee closer to €130m for the winger.

Diomande had previously made Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain his destination of choice this summer, though changed his preference to Madrid as the window progressed.

He joined Leipzig last summer after half a season with Leganes. He scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists in 36 games in his debut season in Germany and appeared in all four of Ivory Coast’s World Cup games as they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Norway.

This summer, Madrid have already completed the signings of Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Espi, while they are also working on a deal to sign Rodri from Manchester City.

Diomande offers versatility as he is comfortable controlling, dribbling, passing and shooting with either foot. As his dashboard from the 2025-26 Bundesliga season shows, he played largely on the right for Leipzig but was a useful option on the left too.

This is welcome news for Madrid. Diomande is the type of winger the club have been searching for: capable of operating on either flank, but primarily on the right, an inconsistent position for them over several years.

Rodrygo — still recovering after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee six months ago — Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler have all moonlighted on the right wing.

Last summer, Madrid believed they had found the solution when 18-year-old Franco Mastantuono joined from River Plate for €63million. However, the Argentinian lost prominence as the season went on and he is set to join Fiorentina on loan.

Silva’s arrival was announced in June, but he is not necessarily the answer either. Although the Portugal international regularly played from the right at Manchester City, Madrid see him playing a central role or in the inside channels, rather than as a traditional winger.

Diomande could be the long-term difference-maker they need on the right. Only five wingers across Europe’s top-five leagues attempted more take-ons than his 7.8 per 90 minutes last season. His 55 per cent success rate was better than anyone in the top 75 for take-on attempts — a marker of his effectiveness from these situations.

Should Vinicius Junior depart, amid interest from Arsenal, Diomande can fit in on the left too. His 675 league minutes on the left last season brought three assists and 12 shots — eight with his right and four with his left — but he did not score.
