100 Indian elephant sculptures to go on display in Boston
BOSTON —
One hundred Indian elephants have migrated to Boston, Massachusetts, for a weekslong stay.
The art installation, handcrafted by indigenous artisans from India’s Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, will be on display at the Commonwealth Avenue Mall from Arlington Street to Fairfield Street from Aug. 8 through Sept. 13.
Titled “The Great Elephant Migration,” the exhibition is part of a global movement to inspire human-wildlife coexistence, with each sculpture representing a real wild elephant.
In the Nilgiri Hills of southern India, humans and elephants share space more closely than anywhere else on Earth.
The Indian elephant is considered an endangered species, with only 20,000-25,000 left in the world, according to the World Wildlife Federation.
Habitat loss, along with poaching, has contributed to the species’s dwindling numbers.
