OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The CDC on Wednesday confirmed that cyclospora cases reported in Nebraska and Iowa have been connected to the national outbreak sourced to Taylor Farms de Mexico iceberg lettuce.
On Wednesday, the CDC website showed 92 reported cyclosporiasis illnesses in Nebraska and 83 in Iowa.
Cases tied to this outbreak were first reported in June. As of Wednesday, the CDC was reporting 6,358 illnesses in 15 states were connected to the lettuce, which prompted Taco Bell to voluntarily remove all affected lettuce from its chain locations out of an abundance of caution even as federal health officials waivered on confirming the source.
The Douglas County Health Department updated its confirmed cyclospora total to 71 on Tuesday, but has not yet indicated how many of those — if any — may be linked to the Nebraska cases now tied to the outbreak.
Last week, officials at the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department said they had noted an atypical increase in reported cases. As of July 29, the health district had reported 33 confirmed cases.
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has reported a spike in cases in recent weeks, according to its most recent report dated July 30. The highest number came the week of July 5, when more than 90 infections were laboratory confirmed.
Cyclosporiasis symptoms can vary, according to the CDC. Common symptoms include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Other symptoms that are less common include vomiting, headache and body aches, low-grade fever, and other flu-like symptoms. The incubation period for cyclosporiasis ranges from two days to two weeks.
