Vermont Highway Patrol name change coincides with upcoming ‘Super Troopers 3’ film
MONTPELIER, Vt. —
Vermont Gov. Phil Scott announced that the Department of Motor Vehicles enforcement division is being renamed the Vermont Highway Patrol to make its authority clearer to drivers.
The name change coincides with the release of the new comedy film “Super Troopers 3,” the third installment of a comedy series set in Vermont about members of a police force also called the Vermont Highway Patrol.
The rebranding for the real Vermont Highway Patrol will cost the state approximately $50,000 for new decals, according to Scott.
“Having highway patrol on the vehicles, I think, it makes people more aware of law enforcement and, to be honest, when they see DMV, I don’t think they even care how fast they’re going. They don’t respect that because they don’t think it’s enforcement,” Scott said.
Vermont is one of the only states to have a DMV traffic enforcement unit assisting state police, a practice dating back to 1919.
And for movie fans, “Super Troopers 3” premieres on Friday, with showtimes scheduled at theaters in Williston and Essex.
