DEPTFORD — The lines grew and grew at the Dick’s Sporting Goods in Deptford, New Jersey.
At noon, Philadelphia Phillies ace Cristopher Sanchez held a one-hour signing, free of charge for local fans.
Sanchez has quickly become a fan favorite over the past several seasons. He started the All-Star Game this past July in Philadelphia.
Earlier in the season, Sanchez set the all-time record for consecutive scoreless innings thrown by a left-handed pitcher with 50 2/3. His legend continues to grow in a sports town that idolizes its players.

Engaging with the fans while on the field is one thing. Interacting with them closely and in a somewhat private setting is another.
I asked Sanchez what events such as this one mean, since he’s getting the opportunity to connect with fans on a more personal level.
Through a personal interpreter, he replied, “[It’s] incredible. I feel it’s my obligation. It’s the least I can do for the fans.”
Those same fans had packed Citizens Bank Park the night prior, celebrating the induction of legend Chase Utley into the club’s Wall of Fame.
Utley will forever be adored in Philadelphia. Sanchez is well on his way to becoming an icon in his own right.
When asked if he envisions his own ceremony after his playing days in Philly are over, Sanchez said, “100%. That is what I am working for.”
If he continues to pitch as we have seen over the last few seasons, I imagine a ceremony of that nature might take place before you know it.
