Mateusz Gamrot vs. Quillan Salkilld: Round 1

Main event time in the refurbished APEX. Jason Herzog is looking in on the lightweights. They touch gloves, and Salkilld takes the center quickly and peppers off two left jabs. Gamrot fires a hard right over the top, then catches a couple kicks. Salkilld lands a left, but Gamrot works for a takedown. He gets a single leg, but Gamrot may be hurt. Salkilld scrambles back to his feet and lands some uppercuts, but Gamrot ties him up and they reverse position on the fence. They scramble, and Gamrot gets a leg. Oh, man. He’s cranking hard, and Salkilld works to clear his right knee from the hold. He gets out and takes Gamrot’s back with 2:45 left in the round. Now Salkilld will try to go to work with Gamrot’s face bloody. Salkilld throws a high kick that is partially blocked, then just misses with a right hand. Salkilld swings hard, then drops down for his own takedown with two minutes left.
They scramble again and Gamrot works out of trouble to have a shot at top position briefly. But Salkilld scrambles back around and takes Gamrot’s back. He’s too high for a rear-naked choke at first, but then regroups and forces Gamrot to tap. The official stoppage came with 35 seconds left in the opening frame.
It’s a mostly dominant performance by Salkilld – and he did it, in the end, on the canvas against someone who was expected to have the edge in that department. That was Salkilld’s official breakout performance, and he certainly seems ready to be a lightweight contender with a finish like that.

Diego Ferreira vs. Billy Quarantillo: Round 3

Ferreira continues to find almost every left hand in the opening minutes of the final round, but Quarantillo is displaying quite the chin. Quarantillo gets a takedown of his own! But it’s not long before he’s reversed and Ferreira has the back. Ferreira takes mount and smashes Quarantillo with a few huge elbows. Quarantillo scrambles back to his feet and is trying to pressure forward. Ferreira answers with another clear left that snaps the head back. Quarantillo somehow is still on his feet and moving forward against Ferreira, who looks tired but is throwing back and landing every time. Ferreira shoots for a takedown with less than a minute left and it’s sloppy. Quarantillo stuffs is and is trying to land something from the turtle position. Ferreira gets the hands free and pulls guard, holding on until the final bell.

Billy Q immediately took the center of the cage to keep coming forward, but that might not have been the smartest idea. It was back-and-forth for most of the round, but Ferreira left hand continuously found a home. 10-9 Ferreira.

Diego Ferreira vs. Billy Quarantillo: Round 1

Ferreira had a lot of success landing lefts and right in the first two minutes while Billy Q plodded forward. He was relentless with the pressure, but it came with a price. Ferreira decided to take down Billy Q with a double leg pretty easily with two minutes remaining. Ferreira didn’t entirely take advantage of the position on top, but he was in control for a good 90 seconds. Easy 10-9 for Ferreira.

Thainara drew first blood in this important round with a flash knockdown on a left hook in the first 20 seconds. The fatigue from Lemos started showing early on, and Thainara capitalized by landing more right hands before clinching again. Little bit of a stalemate situation until Lemos tried to throw punches, but that created an opening for Thainara to get her down and drop some hammerfists. Lemos got back up, though, quickly, but Thainara keot ger under control until Lemos separated with 45 seconds left. They closed out the final 10 seconds exchanging winging punches. I’ll go 10-9 Thainara. Entertaining fight that should be 29-28 Thainara.

Some great action in the first 90 seconds, with both women exchanging AND landing on each other. Pretty even striking until Thainara decided to close for the clinch and slow things down up against the fence. Lemos started looking tired midway through, but she woke up with a hard left that dropped Thainara and had her rushing in out of desperation. It worked, and the fight slowed down again with the clinch near the fence. But even there, both ladies threw punches at each other. When they finally separated with 35 seconds remaining, the round ended with a trae of jab-for-right hand and Thainara taking her down. A little close, but I’m going 10-9 Lemos there.

Amanda Lemos vs. Alexia Thainara: Round 1

After a ho-hum opening 2:20 to start the fight, things came to a halt when Thainara landed a knee straight to the lady parts of Lemos. Lemos took two-and-a-half minutes to recover and immediately pushed the action, but that didn’t work out too well after Thainara landed a big counter-left hook. Credit to Lemos for eating it, because you can tell Thainara has power in those hands. The fight slowed down for the final two minutes in the clinch, which Thainara controlled and landed a few knees. It was enough to win the round 10-9.

Miller’s face looked MESSED UP to start the round, and on the first punch landed, it’s over. Not that it was a devastating punch, but Goff might’ve already had a broken orbital. Sheesh.

Billy Ray Goff vs. Ty Miller: Round 2

Miller’s height and reach advantage were noticeable in the early going as he found success landing jabs from the outside and keeping Goff on his back foot. Miller lit him up with a three-punch combo before he dropped him with a left hook and swarmed in for the finish, but Goff clung for dear life and survived. When they got back to their feet, Goff looked exhausted while Miller still looked pretty fresh as he applied pressure. Goff somehow made it to the end of the round despite taking a ton of damage serving as target practice for Miller. That’s an easy 10-9 for Miller, maybe even a 10-8. Goff’s got a lot of heart, but he has no chance to win unless he gets lucky and catches Miller with something devastating in Round 3.

Goff worked really hard almost the entire round to land a takedown, clinching with Miller against the cage, but he didn’t have anything to show for it. Meanwhile, Miller took full advantage of the little time they were separated, landing some nice combos and doing the only damage in the round. This goes to Miller 10-9.

Pat was continuously beating Asplund to the punch, but Asplund simply would not go away and continued to push forward, until he landed a combo and then a head kick perfectly timed on a level change by Pat that stunned him. That led to Asplund closing in for a standing guillotine, which was tight. I thought it was gonna end there, but Pat found his way out somehow with 3 minutes remaining. It really looked like Pat’s clear speed and athletic advantage was going to allow him to secure the final round, all credit in the world goes to Asplund for taking the fight to Pat. I think he stole it with the near finish and more damage in Round 3. I’ll go 10-9 Asplund, which means I have him 29-28 overall.
But we’ll see!

Steven Asplund vs. Guilherme Pat: Round 2

Pat finally showed his speed advantage in the opening moments with a quick and hard straight right, followed by a left hook that caused a cut under the right eye. Asplund, though, responded with a knockdown, maybe on a punch to the chest, and let Pat back up rather than swarm in. Interesting decision from Herb Dean to separate the guys as they clinched near the cage midway through, and that immediately resulted in Pat knocking down Asplund on the restart. Pat got a warning for grabbing the top of the fence, and they restarted. So much action in this round, which goes to Pat 10-9 for inflicting much more damage with some hard shots.

After a rough-and-tough slog through four minutes, Asplund somehow found knockdown after a punch appeared to graze the top of Pat’s head. Asplund fell right on top of him, held control, and dropped some 12-6 elbows for a strong finish to secure the round. 10-9 Asplund.

For more than three-and-a-half minutes, there wasn’t much action as both men mostly exchanged leg kicks. Then they had a couple of exchanges with nothing significant, but Lopes landed an eye poke to briefly stop the action with 1:11 remaining. On the restart, Nurgo finally found a big overhand right hand that completely discombobulated and dropped Lopes on a delay. It was weird. Nurgo went in the for the finish and looked like he wasn’t going to get it, but then he landed an uppercut that put the lights out just before the horn. Game over.

Shout out to Miranda for fighting as tough as he did in his UFC debut on 10 days’ notice, but Sousa landed so many more damaging punches this round and continued to be effective with the leg kick. Sousa looked fresh the entire round on his way to a 10-9 in my opinion. Should be 29-28 overall for Sousa.

Sousa got off to a good start with the inside leg kicks doing some damage and landing a few hard punches. Miranda fell to the mat, and Sousa chose to engage him, but it felt like a mistake since Miranda was hurt. Miranda looked slow on a takedown attempt, perhaps because of his right leg being hurt from the kicks. Sousa landed a HARD right hand and then a HARD body shot, which folded Miranda, but when Sousa rushed in, Miranda grabbed his leg and took him down? Wow, that was gutsy. But Miranda couldn’t control for long, and Sousa went right back to measuring and teeing off with some hard lefts and rights to close the final minute. 10-9 Sousa, who had a huge bounce-back round. Momentum on his side heading into Round 3.

Sousa closed distance in the early going and clinched with Miranda near the cage, just missing with some hard elbows as he would pull away. That lasted about two minutes, but then they separated and Miranda hit a nice takedown and immediately took his back and got to work on some ground-pound. Things settled down, but Miranda maintaining his position with a body lock and remained in firm control. Good stuff from Miranda, transitioning into a mount position in the final 30 seconds for a strong finish. UFC debut on 10-days notice? No problem after five minutes! 10-9 Miranda.

Johns called Vazquez in to fight him in the middle of the cage midway through the round, but Vazquez didn’t bite. This happened after a slow-ish first half, but then things changed QUICKLY as Vazquez stunned Johns with a punch that clipped the top of his head during a flurry. That dropped Johns briefly, but he recovered and moments later landed a winging left hook that dropped Vazquez. A few more follow-up punches on the mat, and it was all over. Crazy turn of events! Johns wins by knockout.

It didn’t take but about 45 seconds for Miller to get the fight to the ground. Oliveira fought the hands for a little bit, but then Miller made a smooth transition to a rear-naked choke, sunk it in tight, and Oliveira tapped pretty quickly. Impressive performance from Miller.

Oliveira cracked Miller with a hard right hand one minute in, and Miller’s response was to clinch because, yeah, that was nasty. They clinched near the fence for the next couple minutes. I’m not sure Miller knew what she wanted to do there except slow things down. Oliveira finally got loose, but guess what? Miller takedown! And she spent the final 90 seconds in firm control landing some hard ground-and-pound with punches and elbows. That’s a 10-9 for Miller, no question.

Gigi Canuto vs. Carol Foro: Round 3

Canuto sort of stumbled her way into a takedown in the opening 30 seconds, but Foro managed to scramble out quickly. Another takedown by Canuto about a minute later, but Foro again got right back up. On third takedown attempt, Foro sprawled nicely to defend. Halfway through, it started looking like Foro’s round as she threw punches with confidence despite looking fatigued. Canuto’s hands were down almost the entire round. Another takedown attempt from Canuto is stuffed, but she stuck with it and got the fight to the mat with 1:20 left. Canuto managed to get a DEEP armbar locked in, and I don’t know how Foro scrambled out of it. They threw slogging bombs at each other to finish the fight. That was action packed. It was CLOSE, but that last round goes to Foro for doing more damage despite the near-submission from Canuto. I have it 29-28 for Foro.
THIS COULD VERY WELL HOLD UP AS FIGHT OF THE NIGHT. Awesome stuff from these ladies.

Gigi Canuto vs. Carol Foro: Round 2

Canuto learned her lesson from Round 1 and shot in for a takedown in the first 20 seconds, got it, and immediately took Foro’s back. Canuto at one point had Foro’s arm trapped, but she managed to sneak it out. But Canuto managed to keep a body lock on and remained calculated with her attack and submission attempts. Foro pretty much just curled up and never bothered to try getting back to her feet as she ate occasional punches from behind. This round ended up being almost five full minutes of control from Canuto with ground-and-pound and submission attempts. Nice rebound for Canuto, who won it 10-9.
All even going to Round 3!

Gigi Canuto vs. Carol Foro: Round 1

Both women came out throwing hands with bad intentions, and two minutes in they both landed their best punches — a hard right by Canuto, but Foro countered with an even harder left hook that seemed to stun her opponent. Give Canuto credit for her toughness and only shooting one shot, but Foro pieced her up in the final minute of the round. If we had another 20-30 seconds, the fight could’ve been over. That’s a 10-9 for Foro.
