PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – North Country golf course staff say amid U.S. tensions with Canada, business is sub-par.
Earlier this month, WCAX told you about concerns from the Malone golf club, about loss in revenue, with fewer Canadians crossing the border for tee time.
They aren’t alone, Plattsburgh’s Bluff Point Golf Resort says they’re down 18-to-20 percent in business this year.
Owner Paul Dame described the heartbreak he feels for his own livelihood, and cross-border friendships.
“It is definitely tough to put my heart and soul into making a beautiful place that has been visited by Canadians, and used to be owned by a Canadian, and then to have my customers who have been coming for 10, 15, 20 years call me this spring and say we love you, we love your place, but we’re just not going to come down until there’s a change in administration. You know, that hurts,” Dame said.
The resort says they have not laid anyone off yet, but they have had to cut hours for staff.
They say housekeeping staff are hit particularly hard, because with fewer people come fewer tips.
