WIth the incumbent not seeking reelection, the candidate filing deadline for the Poway Unified School District Trustee Area B seat is being extended to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12.
The district covers north Poway and northeast Rancho Bernardo.
The extension is due to incumbent Ginger Couvrette not filing candidacy documents by the Aug. 7 filing deadline, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
The candidates in Trustee Area B who had qualified for the ballot as of Monday morning were Brett Davis, a father and business owner; and Kym Sosnowski, an education advocate and parent.
Couvrette has served two four-year terms on the Poway Unified school board starting in 2018 and was re-elected in 2022.
Couvrette said on Monday that she decided not to run for the school board again because she believes two terms is an appropriate amount of time to serve even without term limits. She said she is “deeply grateful” for the opportunity to serve the school district and expressed appreciation for Poway Unified’s dedicated teachers, parents, staff and students.

“I’m thankful for the time I spent on the board, and I learned a lot,” said Couvrette, who added that she wants to continue assisting initiatives such as dual enrollment and career technical education. “Those are important initiatives to push forward, but I don’t need to be an elected official to do that.
“Education is most meaningful when students can connect what they learn in the classroom with college, careers and their individual goals,” she added. “Poway Unified School District is a large district which gives it the ability to offer alternate education paths.”
Couvrette said she is eager to focus her attention on the Poway Community Foundation, a philanthropic organization she co-chairs with her husband, John Couvrette, that raises funds for nonprofits. And she plans to run unopposed for a position on the San Diego Association of Realtors. If elected, she would start to serve on the Association of Realtors in January, she said.
Other candidates who qualified for the ballot for the Poway Unified Trustee Area C are Jason Bennett, a parent and business owner; and incumbent Trustee Heather Plotzke. The candidates who qualified for the ballot for Trustee Area D are Daniela Darling, a parent and children therapist; incumbent Trustee Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff; and Jennifer Dahlquist Ramirez, an educational consultant.
