GILBERT, AZ (AZFamily) — Waymo is growing its footprint across the Valley, adding 55 square miles to its autonomous ride-hailing service and bringing its total Phoenix-area coverage to more than 350 square miles.
The expansion opens service to several East Valley communities, including Gilbert, additional parts of Chandler, and San Tan Ranch, Waymo announced Thursday morning.

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is also expected to be added as a stop in the near future, which would make Phoenix the city with the most airport access to Waymo in the world, joining Sky Harbor International Airport and Scottsdale Airpark.
Because the expansion reaches closer to Waymo’s Mesa facility, vehicles can drive themselves directly from the facility into service, picking up their first passengers within minutes of leaving the building.
For Waymo, the move carries a sense of history. The East Valley is where the company launched its first riders, first trips, and first community partnerships back in 2020.
“This expansion marks a meaningful homecoming for Waymo,” the company wrote. “We’re excited to return with a larger, more capable service that reflects years of intentional scaling, infrastructure development, and continued commitment to safety.”
