Lifeguards rescue another injured jumper at Sunset Cliffs

San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards rescued another person believed to have injured themselves while jumping into the ocean from the top of Sunset Cliffs on Sunday, officials said.

The incident was reported around 7:30 p.m. at The Arch, a popular jumping spot on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard near Froude Street, said Fire-Rescue spokesperson Candace Hadley.

Lifeguards were told a man who was jumping into the water below had injured himself and needed to be pulled from the water, Hadley said.

Firefighters, medics and lifeguards responded to the area and used a low-angle rope rescue system to move the injured man to flat ground, according to Hadley.

He was then carried out to the top of the cliff and taken to a hospital with injuries believed not to be life-threatening.

This is the third reported Sunset Cliffs jumping incident in the last three weeks. On July 26, a 17-year-old boy jumped from the cliff’s edge at The Arch and his backside slammed into the rocks below. He was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.

Two days later, a man suspected of cliff jumping was climbing up the cliff face and fell on the rocks below. He was taken to a hospital with “traumatic injuries.”

In an effort to curb dangerous cliff jumping, as well as other unlawful behavior, during the summer, the San Diego Police Department said its officers dedicate additional resources to patrol beaches and the coastline.

Since the July 26 incident, officers have issued 20 citations — misdemeanors and infractions — for cliff jumping at Sunset Cliffs and more than 300 warnings to would-be jumpers, police Lt. Cesar Jimenez said on Thursday.

“Officers conduct high-visibility patrols on foot and in beach vehicles while enforcing local laws and ordinances,” Jimenez said. “Public disturbances, unauthorized concerts or parties with amplified sound, open container and alcohol violations, and unlawful behavior will not be tolerated.”

“We welcome everyone to enjoy our public beaches responsibly, respect the community and help keep these spaces safe for all,” the lieutenant added.
