Zack Baun and Nolan Smith, two of the Eagles’ top defenders, were both absent from practice on Tuesday and will likely miss a bit of training camp time.
Baun suffered a back contusion and Smith a concussion, presumably both during practice on Monday.
The Eagles don’t give timelines on injuries. They are scheduled to practice Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Monday and next Tuesday before an off day next Wednesday before the preseason opener against the Bengals at the Linc a week from Thursday.
Baun was a 1st-team all-pro last year in his first year as an inside linebacker. With the Eagles’ other 2024 starter, Nakobe Dean, out indefinitely with a knee injury from last year and last year’s playoff starter, Oren Burks, now with the Bengals, the Eagles’ inside linebacker depth chart includes rookie Jihaad Campbell, 2nd-year pro Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and rookie 5th-round pick Smael Mondon from Georgia as well as Dallas Gant and undrafted rookie Lance Dixon from Toledo.
Campbell, 21, and Trotter, 22, have both gotten 1st-team reps this summer. Mondon, also 22, missed practice Monday with an illness and returned Tuesday on a limited basis. Campbell is also still listed as limited with a shoulder injury, but he has been close to a full participant.
With Brandon Graham retired, Bryce Huff now with the 49ers and Josh Sweat with Arizona, the Eagles have a new-look edge rusher group led by Smith, who had 10 ½ sacks in the last 16 games last year, including a franchise-record four in the postseason. Jalyx Hunt has been the other starting edge, with veteran newcomers Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari battling for backup reps.
Other edges on the roster are rookie 6th-round pick Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr., veteran special teamer Patrick Johnson, newly acquired veteran Ogbo Okoronkwo and veteran Ochaun Mathis.
Rookie 2nd-round pick Andrew Mukuba, the safety from Texas, missed a second day with a shoulder injury, and DeVonta Smith was out a second day with back tightness. Also out was receiver Danny Gray (finger).
Jalen Carter, who missed the first three days of practice, was a limited participant Tuesday for the second day in a row. Also limited was center Cam Jurgens as he continues to rehab his back injury.
Tuesday was the Eagles’ first practice day with full pads. With temperatures rising into the 90s, the Eagles moved the start of practice up an hour from 10 a.m. to 9 a.m.
