CHICAGO—The University of Chicago men’s soccer team defeated Gustavus Adolphus in a second-half explosion on the Maroons’ Senior Day. After trailing at halftime, UChicago came roaring back, scoring all three of its goals in a span of 15 minutes.
The Golden Gusties found the back of the net first on a corner kick that was headed into the goal. Taking an early 1-0 lead 30 minutes into the game, Gustavus Adolphus sent the Maroons into halftime trailing despite UChicago holding an 8-4 advantage in shots.
The second period opened with Gustavus Adolphus maintaining control of the ball. Just as its momentum was building off a shot attempt by Hoch, the Maroons found their footing and never looked back.
With less than 30 minutes left to play, Vaughn DeRath played a give-and-go to Evan Kanellos down the right side of the field. Dribbling to create space, Kanellos crossed the ball to Samuel Jimenez, who headed it into the net for the Maroons’ first goal of the game. With the score even at 1-1, UChicago knew it needed to capitalize on the energy boost.
Just five minutes later, Kanellos scored the go-ahead goal off a penalty kick following a successful VAR challenge by the Maroons. UChicago was awarded the penalty after challenging a no-call on a handball in the box.
The Maroons’ scoring tirade wasn’t over yet. With less than 15 minutes to play, UChicago found the back of the net for the third time. Stealing possession on a Golden Gusties throw-in, Preston Samtani dribbled 30 yards up the middle before finding Chase Perry running down the left side. With a clear break, Perry fired the ball into the middle of the goal for the Maroons’ final goal of the afternoon.
Despite the early goal, UChicago’s defense held strong, while Ali Alamery recorded six saves on seven shots faced.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 2-1 on the year. They’ll take a three-day break before returning to the pitch Thursday night to take on Albion at home.
